The key’s of St. Peter are symbolic of Papal authority (the general layout of St. Peter's Basilica is roughly key-shaped as well) and comes directly from the Gospel of Matthew (16:19): “And I will give to you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever you shall bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever you shall loose on earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven.” But why keys? Why not a sword or crown or some other object?
In the ancient world a trusted servant to the king would carry the king's house key over his shoulder signifying that he had the authority to enter and close the king's house. In Isaiah 22:22 we see this in practice as Eliakim is given "the key of the house of David…on his shoulder." The imagery and meaning would have been clear to anyone at the time.
The phrasing of the binding and loosing was also a common formulation given by a king to his most trusted servant to rule in his absence. Jesus conferred on St. Peter the highest honor and position in His Kingdom possible. The symbolism was again clear to not only the apostles, but the early Church fathers as well and is the basis for Papal authority and succession.
